Meet Our Captains

Alika Sokol

How many years have you been on the high school team?
4 years

Can you share a memorable moment you've had with the team?

A memorable moment that I have with this team, would be the annual Christmas party. Each year, we have a saran wrap ball filled with fun treats inside that everyone tries to get. I have never laughed more while watching the girls struggle to unwrap the ball with oven mitts on. Last year it became the most competitive part of our season! This was a memorable moment because of the laughter and joy that the team expressed.

What has been the most significant lesson you've learned through gymnastics that applies to your personal life?
The most significant lesson I have learned through gymnastics is that your mental, and physical health, have a great tie together. This applies to my personal life because while being in the sport of gymnastics, you need to push yourself to your highest potential and to do that you need a strong, positive mindset. This allows your physical body to feel comfortable to do amazing things such as flipping in the air. Although it was a lesson to be learned, it was definitely the most significant.

Who has been your biggest support system outside of gymnastics?
My biggest support system outside of gymnastics is my mom. She cheers me on every chance she gets, and sticks by my side through anything, and everything. She pushes me to do the best of my ability, while surrounding me with positive energy!

Can you share a memorable moment you've had with the team?
A memorable moment from being on the team is when we traveled up north to Perham and got dinner at Pizza Ranch. Then we got back to the hotel and all went to the pool together and went to our rooms anticipating the big meet the next morning. This was a great memory because it really brought the team together when I was still new to it.

What advice would you give to younger gymnasts aspiring to be leaders?
To the younger gymnasts aspiring to be leaders- remember that leaders don’t create followers, they create other leaders. This means that when you are a leader, you should encourage others and be supportive instead of just having them follow you.

In what ways do you think gymnastics has influenced your life outside of the sport?
Gymnastics has influenced my life outside of the sport by making me an overall stronger person physically and mentally. The team has also grown me socially by creating many new friends that I hangout with outside of training. I feel that gymnastics has positively impacted my life so much.
